In the winter, Rovaniemi is a city of snow glistening beneath the astonishing Northern Lights, also known as "Aurora Borealis". The Northern Lights are observed on around 150 nights in a year from mid-August till early April. The Arctic Garden and the top of Ounasvaara fell are the best destinations to witness Northern Lights.

There are plenty of activites mainly in the Ounasvaara Ski Resort, which offers downhill skiing and snowboarding, snowmobiling, dogsledding and reindeer sleigh rides.

In addition to all that snow, you’ll find a vibrant cultural scene with concerts, theatre and art exhibitions. Arktikum is home to the Provincial Museum of Lapland, presenting the cultural heritage of the region as well as to the Arctic Centre, dedicated to the interaction between man and nature in the North.
