Crete is home to a vast variety of attractions that are able to cover all individual interests and tastes. One among these places is the Matala beach which is located 68km southwest of the city of Heraklion. The beach is one of the most known beaches in Heraklion and one of the most famous areas in the Island of Crete. The reason for its massive and increased popularity is the interesting rocky formations that create caves inside them. These caves used to be hosting members of the hippie movement during the 1970’s. Matala and the infamous caves are something worth exploring.
