Spinalonga Island

Spinalonga Island

There is not a possible way that visitors of Elounda will not get the chance to observe and visit the infamous Island of Spinalonga. The small Island used to serve as a Venetian fortress, during the 15th century, which had 40 cannons protecting the Mirabello bay. When the Island was abandoned, Greek authorities decided to establish a leper colony there. Patients from Crete and from other parts of Greece were transferred there in order to be isolated from the rest of the population. The lepers’ colony existed there until 1957 when a cure was found. Spinalonga Island remains there as a reminder of the people that used to be living there. Visitors can access the Island with a boat and walk around the Venetian fortress.
